Combat the Ramifications of Excessive Sitting with TENS / EMS Machine

Combat the Ramification of Excessive Sitting
Reading Time: 2 minutes

All this extra time at home has made excessive sitting even a bigger problem than it already was. People are staying at home permanently with Home Schooling, Working from Home, and Relaxing at Home. Now the only time seems to be Home Time. This means a lot of sitting; especially in front of the computer.

This can result in various types of pain appearing or resurfacing; lower back pain, neck pain, sciatic pain, among others.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machines are used to treat pain. They are a proven effective drug-free easy to use treatment. And what is better, many TENS devices also have EMS functions. EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) can be used to give your body a workout or a massage. So, the same device can prevent the pain from occurring and help you to relax and improve your muscle strength!

TENS / EMS devices work by delivering small electrical pulses through electrodes attached to the skin with adhesive gel pads. When in a TENS Mode, these electrical pulses block the nerves that transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain; thereby relieving the pain. TENS stimulation also causes the body to release endorphins; the body’s natural pain-relieving hormones. In EMS Mode, the pulses cause muscle contraction to mimic exercising.

Here are the simple steps to using your TENS / EMS machine for different purposes:

  1. Make sure the machine is switched off;
  2. Use two channels of your TENS / EMS machine;
  3. Clean the skin;
  4. Place the gel pads around the area in pain. Ideally, one gel pad on each side of the area in pain, one higher than the other. The other channel crisscrossing, with the painful area inside the box which has been formed; Make sure they are at least 2-3cm apart from each other. See the example below for using TENS / EMS on the lower back:

5. Choose an appropriate program. Most devices will have specific programs using TENS for pain relief or EMS for massage or strengthening

6. Begin the treatment by turning on the machine and increasing the intensity to a level which is comfortable but stimulation is felt;

7. Programs will normally run for 30 to 40 minutes and can be repeated as frequently as needed. It is suggested to use it for a minimum of two or three times a day.
